Obituary of Louis Raymond Shambo

Louis Raymond Shambo, age 96, of Auburn, passed away on August 26, 2014 at the VA Hospital in Syracuse. Lou was predeceased by his wife of 64 years, Jane Shambo, on July 4, 2010. Mr. Shambo, son of Louis and Mary Delehant Shambo, was a native of Auburn and a communicant of Sacred Heart in Auburn, and St. Mary Magdalene in Wolcott. Growing up on Steel Street, Lou was an original Y-Fielder, spending many hours at the clubhouse with his friends and Jack Clifford the Y-Field Superintendent. A veteran of World War II, Lou served in the 2nd Armored Division and participated in the invasion at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. He was Civil Service Commissioner for the City of Auburn in the 1960's under Mayor Maury Schwartz. Lou was a member of the Highland Golf Club for 54 years where he was past president and a member of the hole-in-one and double eagle clubs. Mr. and Mrs. Shambo enjoyed over 50 summers at their cottage at Fair Haven. He is survived by his sons, Richard Shambo (Sharman) of Fair Haven and Peter Shambo (Andrea Wandersee) of Syracuse; his daughter, Terry Ann Ecker (William) of Elbridge; and by his beloved grandchildren, Brendan Shambo, Erin Ray (Brian), Cara Bender (Rick), Kristie Richardson (Michael), Meaghan Ecker, Benjamin Ecker, and three great-grandsons, Mason Ray, Charlie Shambo and Max Ray, who were the love of his life. A Mass of Christian burial will be held for the family at a later date.
