Obituary of William John Scott

On Saturday, April 24th, William John Scott, dedicated and loving husband & father of four, passed away from an unexpected health condition at the age of 53. He was with family and at the place he loved most; Camp Bonaparte. Bill was born on October 15th, 1967 in Syracuse, New York, a community he served endlessly.

He was a licensed master social worker, elected as the President of the Syracuse Teachers Association in May of 2019. He was employed with Syracuse City School District since 2006. Social justice and advocacy were lifelong passions.

Bill is survived by his wife of almost 20 years, Carolyn Esther Scott (Lavine) and his 4 children, Megan Elizabeth, Amelia Vera, Aiden Cary, and Liam Reese. His parents, William Henry Scott and Carolyn Margaret Scott, his sister Dawn Topolewski (Bryan Topolewski) and his 2 nieces. As well as his uncles, aunts, and 15 first cousins and their children. Through marriage he gained 3 loving brothers; Michael, Jerry (Faith), and Scott Lavine. He was a loving uncle to 6 Lavine nieces and nephews. Bill is additionally survived by his father-in-law Robert Lavine (Bob) and predeceased by his mother-in-law Martha Lavine.

Bill had a passion for cars and racing like no other. A fanatic of comics, “Calvin and Hobbes,” Star Wars, James Bond, U2, DMB, thorough pranks and Halloween decorations. He loved to work on handyman projects and home remodeling with his wife - many to still be finished! He was known for being a proud father and change maker of the community. We will miss him forever.
