Obituary of Joan Louise Jewell

Joan Louise Jewell, 89, died peacefully with family present on January 20th, 2016 at Hebrew Senior Life in Boston, MA. She is predeceased by her husband Joseph Jewell, former deputy chief of police of Syracuse, NY and survived by her sons, Dr. Joe Jewell of Los Angeles, CA , Jeff Jewell of Stuart ,FL , and Dr. James Jewell and wife, Dr. Janice Pegels of Boston, MA; and grandchildren Adrian and Marcella Jewell. Also surviving are her brothers, Louis Follett of Mt. Laurel, NJ, Dr. John Follett of Cummington, MA; and sisters, Peggy Cristafolo of Narberth, PA, and Sue Albrecht of Exton, PA. Joan graduated from Baldwinsville High School in 1944, received her RN from the University of Rochester School of Nursing in 1947 and worked at Onondaga County Hospital, Crouse Irving, and St. Joseph's Hospital, from which she retired in 1987. She also lived in Syracuse and Liverpool. Joan loved to swim at White Lake, Sylvia Lake, and Jamesville reservoir. She loved big band music even up to the week she died. She was a fun loving redhead who even surprised staff in later years with her wit and grace. Calling hours will take place at A. Dewitt Memorial Funeral Homes, 4612 S. Salina Street, Syracuse, NY 13205 on Saturday March 5th, from 1 to 3 p.m. A short service will occur at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Syracuse SPCA as Joan was an ardent animal lover.
