Obituary of George Henry Smith

George Henry Smith, Sr. (AKA George Henry Swiatlowicz) 88, originally of Liverpool, NY, passed this life peacefully, Tuesday, November 10, 2015. He was born to the late Vincent Swiatlowicz and Mary Nienartowicz in Syracuse, NY on January 10, 1927. He joined the Navy January 17, 1945, seven days after his 18th birthday, during his senior year of high school. He received a Victory Medal and an American Theater Medal during active service as Naval Corpsman/Hospital Apprentice First Class. He received an Honorable Discharge in August 1946, returned to Syracuse, NY and graduated from Central High School. George later studied at Syracuse University as a Math/Music major. He later became an Electrician and worked for over 20 years at Onondaga Community College. He married Loretta Josephine DeFrank in 1953 and they resided in Liverpool, NY for over 60 years together. George was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He loved music, especially Jazz and played piano. He collected records and also loved classic film. He studied hypnosis, and became a gifted hypnotist. He was also interested in language studies. George is survived by his brother William Smith (Swiatlowicz). He is also survived by his three children: Marianne Smith Dalton (Matthew) of Cazenovia, NY; Teresa Rose Smith Gambuzza (Michael) of Syracuse, NY; and William Edward Smith (Caroline) of Philadelphia, PA. Four grandchildren also survive him: Genevieve, Christian, Hudson and Harrison. George will be laid to rest at Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Syracuse, NY on November 14, 2015. Service will be private.
