Obituary of Rowena Malamud
Rowena (Rocki) Malamud 93, of Dewitt and East Syracuse, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 31, 2021. Rocki was born on October 15, 1927 in New York City to the late Philip and Martha Chaiton and was the couple's only child. Rocki married Abe Malamud in 1947. The young married couple first took up residence in Upper Peninsula, Michigan where Abe had his first teaching job. After a couple of seasons in winterly Michigan, they relocated to Syracuse where they began their family, having four children in 6 years. Rocki led a full and active life and was engaged in many different activities and jobs, including hat model, writer for a motion picture trade magazine, public relations flack, office manager, typographer, stage manager and producer for Salt City Playhouse and The Talent Company, bureaucrat, Japanese art & culture lover, books, President of the Greater Syracuse NOW, WCNY TV panelist and a Literacy Volunteer and was named the 1994 Literacy Volunteer’s National Tutor of the Year. Rocki will be remembered for the friendship, love and joy she brought to people's heart.
She is survived by her two children Deborah (married to Jack) and Jonathan (married to Tomi) and five grandchildren (Rebecca, Brian, Sara, Alan and Rebecca).
