last night i was goggling the three or four people who, in their ways, made the most difference in my life and career. two were my editors at newsweek, one who hired me and another who made me a writer; a third was a un secretary-general who brought me into his diplomatic world as a speechwriter and opened my eyes to the world. the fourth was bob slentz, who taught me chemistry and physics but so much more than that. at one of the bleakest periods of my life, when i had been rejected from every college i applied to, he asked me in a hallway why i seemed downcast, then offered the solution. ''why, i'll call my friend the director of admissions at hamilton. it would be wonderful for you." and so it was. i owe bob so much.

Yesterday, at the funeral, and right next door jazz session, I had the most remarkable thought of my long life. I wished I had had more children!!!!!!! I think it is so wonderful that you all saw him to the end as the fine person you had always loved. You are really lucky, as I know from experience here, watching the man I love go from an equally wonderful, impressive partner to an invalid in mind and body. You are luckier than you know. Love to you all and all the progeny. I write this with tears in my eyes.

I was sorry to hear of Bob's passing. Marcille sent the news to me. My father Kenneth and Bob were cousins and both he and my mother were so happy to have had the wonderful visits they had getting to know your family these past few years. My Dad and Bob had so many things in common, even their education and subjects they taught.Bob passed away on the date of what would have been my mom's 84th birthday-our first one without her. Please know my family is thinking of you all and sending you our prayers. I know you are a wonderful family that will be there for each other in this difficult time.

My years at WCCS with Mr. Slentz as my science teacher had a profound effect on my life.  As a result of his knowledge and enthusiasm, I pursued a rewarding career as a research scientist at DuPont which produced opportunities and experiences I would never have dreamed of while growing up in Scottsville.  My most memorable time with Mr. Slentz was the summers we spent at RIT's downtown campus in joint student-teacher research programs.  During the Clarissa St. riots of 1964, every day Mr. Slentz hoped his old 1958 Chevy station wagon would be stolen so he could get a new car ! Please accept my deepest sympathy on Mr. Slentz's passing.

Mr. Slentz was one of the best of mentors at Wheatland-Chili. I loved science and was in the science club that he headed. To this day I remember clearly going to the science projects final fair at another school. My homeroom was Mr Stevenson''''s room next to his. He will be sorely missed, but should be celebrated for his legacy.  My condolences to the family.

My sincere condolence to the Slentz family.  Mr. Slentz was my chemistry teacher at the American School of The Hague back in the late 70's.  He made the classroom learning experience so fun and so easy, that I chose to go into biology/chemistry-related major in college.  It was obvious that teaching was his calling; he had that special rapport with his students.  What a great loss; he will be missed as a great man.

Beginning when my daughter was in 1st grade at MPH, Bob Slentz fostered a love of science in her that remains to this day. Chemistry has always been her favorite and  Bob was a wonderful role model. He encouraged her to follow her heart, and today she is a chemistry teacher in VA. I am so honored that she was able to have his knowledge and enthusiasm for her entire K-12 experience. He will be greatly missed!

Mrs. Slentz, I used to make those early morning calls to ask Bob to sub at MPH. I don't think I'll ever be able to look at a slide ruler without thinking of his dedication to them:) and science. He had such a positive and enthusiastic personality and it was infectious! I send along my sincerest condolences to you and your family. Bob will be missed by many. When I was 13 my little brother was born and this caused me not to do my science homework that evening.  The next day Mr. Slentz asked me why in class and I remember being very embarrassed to almost whisper that my baby brother was born last night.  I thought i was in trouble but Mr. Slentz was overjoyed to hear the news and all talk of homework was forgotten.  I always think of him as kind and understanding.   For me, he taught more than science.

Reading of Bob''s passing this morning brings a rush of wonderful memories of those very special years at Wheatland-Chili. Bob was an extraordinary educator....a wise leader, an incredible mentor, a gifted teacher, and dear friend. For those of us who were his young colleagues, we were truly blessed! May Prue and the entire Slenta family know how he remains loved and respected by so many! May you all know God''s amazing peace.

Sadden by the passing of "Good Ole Bob",  gentlemen and a scholar to all he came in contact with, fine teacher, fine leader. Wonderful family who gave him many grand children and great grand children. Scottsville, NY.............one of many of his teaching stops was very well respected by adminstrators, students, peers and very likable individual.  A great sense of humor, pretty even kneel person that enjoyed his friends and all his co-workers at the school. Truly set high standards for his teaching ability, took time for students that had some issues grasping the work, he hated to see anyone fail. God Bless the Sletz family and his adorable wife Pru, they were one of the nicest families to settle in our community.
