LaRue Heaney

Obituary of LaRue Margaret Heaney

LaRue Margaret (Breitenstein) Heaney, 86, slipped the surly bonds of earth on Sunday, March 14th.

Born in Reading, Pennsylvania to Pearl E. Weidner and Daniel S. Breitenstein, LaRue was raised in Syracuse where she became fast friends with Jane Heaney, her future sister-in-law. Married to James in 1953, she bore nine children, having survived tuberculosis after her second child.

LaRue was renowned for her homemade cooking, drawing heavily from her Pennsylvania Dutch roots. She delighted in growing vegetables and fruits from seed, a valuable contribution to the family budget. She made clothes, knitted and crocheted while providing moral guidance and stability to the family. LaRue became a waitress at Drumlins Banquets where she made many friends from coworkers and guests alike. Delving into entrepreneurship, she ran the Manhattan Onion Pizza Parlor during the 1990s. Upon retirement, she traveled to spend time with each of her children and grandchildren. Predeceased by her parents and husband, she also suffered greatly at the loss of two children, James III and Elizabeth “Liz”.

Surviving are daughters LaRue “Debbie”, Susan (Gene) and Mary, and sons Dr. Steven, Bruce (Debbie), Dr. Alan (Brooke) and David (Holly), as well as eleven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A private service for immediate family will be held on Monday, March 22 at 10 AM at A Dewitt Memorial Funeral Home with burial at Valley Cemetery following. Friends and family who wish to view the wake and service may join virtually at:
